Freshwater Acute Mental Health Unit is a new 5-bed forensic mental health wing designed to provide the highest level of care for NSW Justic Health and Forensic Mental Health Network. NBRS was engaged in the planning and design of the new spaces as part of the Forensic Hospital at Malabar.
The innovative Freshwater Unit provides accommodation and treatment for high-risk patients both adults and young people and male or female. It will support rehabilitation, recovery and return to standard forensic health care or alternative care pathways by seeking to create an environment around therapeutic outcomes and reduction in stigma of isolation and segregation. Safety and security were of the upmost importance in every detail of the design and planning with the unique model-of-care providing a 3:1 ratio of staff to patients, private rooms with individual courtyards accessible by patients, and integrated indoor and outdoor living spaces.
