A learning oasis in the urban jungle

Education
Architecture

A multi-storey senior school nestled into the urban fabric of Rockdale, providing a contemporary learning environment for the community.

The design concept revolves around the creation of a vibrant and inclusive community through the strategic use of open spaces, visual transparency, and natural elements. The school is designed around a central atrium, allowing abundant natural light to flood all learning spaces. This layout promotes a healthy and stimulating environment for students and staff alike. Additionally, the transparency around the central atrium enhances the sense of community by visually connecting different levels and promoting interaction among the users.

The learning spaces represent modern teaching methods by prioritising flexibility and technology, with the inclusion of specialised spaces such as a commercial kitchen, science labs and a music room. The engaging learning environment provides a variety of spaces to suit the pedagogical model and collaboration between classes.

In order to establish a strong connection with nature despite limited landscaped areas, we have integrated a double-height green wall within the central courtyard. This green element not only brings the benefits of nature into the heart of the school but also breaks down the concrete void. The play spaces within the building are strategically incorporated, encouraging play and relationship building, while alternate dynamic outdoor spaces are available for staff.

The use of synthetic grass and soft fall floor with timber ceiling finishes were chosen for their robust materiality and to soften the hard aesthetic of the concrete rooftops. The incorporation of Coptic art within the design adds a distinct sense of identity. It creates an environment that celebrates creativity and promotes a deep understanding and appreciation of the Coptic culture.
