Originally designed by Louis S. Robertson and Son, the Eastern Suburbs Memorial Park Crematorium was built in 1937 in the Art deco design style and became a historically, aesthetically, socially significant, prominent landmark within the cemetery, overlooking Botany bay.

Southern Metropolitan Cemeteries engaged NBRS to provide upgrades to the building using the Heritage Architectural Services and Interior Design, from concept design through to construction.

NBRS prepared a Conservation works Schedule for the project, following the earlier NBRS Conservation Management plan for the Memorial Park, completed in 2020.

The project scope included the introduction of new accessible ramps and handrails, new and refurbished staff amenities, new mechanical, fire and electrical services, internal alterations and refurbishment of the: cremator hall, control room, ash processing room, work room, offices and columbaria, external conservation works and a new interior design scheme for the chapels,

The Interior design scheme was carefully developed to refresh the chapels with new carpet, pendant lights, furniture and acoustic treatments, achieving a contemporary revitalized space with an enhanced appreciation of the original design features.

This refresh allows the building to ‘return back to life’ giving families and friends a space to honour and reflect on the person’s life, turning the sadness into a place of connection and reflection.
