The Woronora Memorial Park Crematorium was built in 1934 to a design by Louis S. Robertson and Son in the Art Deco Style. Its exterior features rectilinear forms adorned in an ornamental frieze, while the interior retains original timber joinery and Art Deco plaster detailing. The crematorium is a historically, aesthetically and socially significant local heritage item.

Southern Metropolitan Cemeteries engaged NBRS to provide upgrades to the building using Heritage Architectural Services and Interior Design, from concept design through to construction.

NBRS prepared a Conservation works Schedule for the project, following the earlier NBRS Conservation Management plan for the Memorial Park, completed in 2020.

The project required modifications to ramps and new handrails, new accessible amenities, conversion of the former work room and ash store to a concierge office, the extension of the staff lunchroom, new mechanical, fire and electrical services, conservation works and a new interior design scheme for the South and West Chapels. Also, the removal of a later addition roof over the Court of Remembrance to reinstate this space to its original configuration as an open courtyard, now surrounding a rose garden.

The Interior design scheme was carefully developed to refresh the South and West Chapels with new carpet, fabric and acoustic treatments. A new colour scheme was developed to interpret the original green colour of the exterior. The scheme provided a creative and sensitive response to the original architectural features of these significant spaces.

These upgrades allow Woronora to continue to share its vision of providing a space for people to share their loved one’s stories ensuring their memories and legacy are never forgotten.
