NBRS has been honoured with the prestigious Australian Institute of Architects NSW Award for Sustainable Architecture for our work on the Bay Pavilions Arts + Aquatic Centre.

Working in conjunction with Donovan Payne Architects, the Bay Pavilions Arts + Aquatic Centre is an elegant and efficient floor plan with two distinct programs anchored by the entry hall and café space. Find out more about the project here.

On one side sits the impressive theatre with its suite of function rooms and back-of-house spaces to serve a diverse and culturally active community. On the other side is an aquatic centre with multiple pools, wet play areas, and a gymnasium to support a broad range of users, including the elderly.

The functional and efficient configuration using robust and low maintenance materials delivers operational energy and labour efficiencies for the operator, maximises the use of built space, and promises a long lifespan for this building.

Delivered within the constraints of a tight budget, public building demands, and multiple programs' complexity. NBRS demonstrated commendable engagement with the community, leading to a refreshing and practical approach – including the timber-clad curving forms of the river-side site reflected throughout.

This award is a testament to NBRS' commitment to creating sustainable, eco-friendly environments that positively impact our communities. The Bay Pavilions Arts + Aquatic Centre inspires future architects and designers to create sustainable spaces that benefit both people and the planet.

The NSW Architecture Awards celebrates design excellence in architecture in NSW. It is also a great way for architects to receive public and peer recognition for projects and helps the Institute promote architects and architecture within NSW, across Australia, and internationally.
